Conference to examine crime prevention, safe city strategies

Patterns of crime and socio-economic conditions, links between youth mental illness and criminal behaviour, and factors that contribute to Mississauga's reputation as one of the safest cities in Canada will be among the topics discussed at the first annual Community Crime Prevention Conference on Saturday, Sept. 11, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., at River Grove Community Centre, 5800 River Grove Ave., Mississauga.

Looking East and West

How U of T manages its two rapidly growing east and west campuses will be a central issue for members of the university's Governing Council when it reconvenes this fall.

The council's September meeting will be the first for several new governors, including Nykolaj Kuryluk, one of three alumni representatives elected in the spring. Maureen Somerville, who has served on council since 2004, was re-elected. And professor emeritus Michael Marrus, who was previously a faculty governor, will continue his long service as an alumni governor.

U of T awarded two Knowledge Synthesis Grants on the Digital Economy

Two University of Toronto professors, including U of T Mississauga political scientist David Wolfe, have been awarded Knowledge Synthesis Grants on the Digital Economy, a one-time initiative of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

SSHRC's Knowledge Synthesis Grants will help identify research opportunities related to the digital economy by pinpointing critical knowledge gaps. The grants are worth up to $25,000 and only 10 have been awarded across the country.

Second employee survey coming this fall

During her second year of a BA at U of T Mississauga, Rumeet Toor acquired the company where she worked part time: Jobsineducation.com, an online job site for those in the education field. I bought it as a for-profit business, but pretty quickly I began to think about what I could create out of it, says Toor, president of the company. It began with giving a percentage of our revenue to causes supporting education.
